Program Notes

Palette and Spectrum explores music as human "mark-making" in sound. Inspired by the creative relationships between visual artists and composers engaging with artistic abstraction, the piece introduces a unique tonal palette and paints its way through both musical time and conceptual space, exploring aggressive hard edges, deep color fields, and ambiguous narrative images. While not based on any single artwork or painter, Palette and Spectrum embraces musical events as phenomenologically interesting in their own existence. These events are reminiscent of the mark-making techniques by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Willem de Kooning, and Yves Klein, while embracing the enticing energies made possible by the brush and canvas of the wind band.”
