Program Notes

Overture on an Early American Folk Hymn was commissioned by and dedicated to the South Carolina Bandmasters' Association. The work was premiered by the South Carolina All-State Band with the composer conducting. The hymn tune used in the overture is My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, which was written in 1836, and is found in the hymnal Southern Harmony. The text of the hymn is a paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm.
