Program Notes

The Shakers were a late 18th century division from the Quakers. They believed that God was bth father and mother. They practiced a communal life, which included much singing and dancing. Through their beliefs they created music that has lasted to the present. Simple Gifts is the most well-known Shaker tune.

Overture on a Shaker Tune uses Simple Gifts as the main melodic material. here are two statements of the theme. The first comes after the introduction, and the second finishes the piece after an interlude of material from both the introduction and new development material.
