Program Notes
While writing The Other Side of Hope, the goal was to write a piece that wasn’t technically difficult, but focused on the unique color, blend, and emotion that a concert band can create. The piece itself is often without a dominant melody. This leads to the melody being created by the change of notes from individual players in the ensemble, giving sections of the piece a timeless and ethereal feeling. In sections with a dominant melody, it is often found in a solo voice floating on top of the sound of the ensemble. As the piece ends, it finishes on a reflective note, leaving the listener to ponder on the emotions the piece led them through.
