Program Notes

Open Piece No. 7 was inspired by my painting "To The Teeth" which I gave to Alan and Misty Theisen in 2015. "To The Teeth" is a small abstract work. The colors smear and create a grinding intensity which gives more action to the calmer background. I tried to evoke these ideas with small solos and duos which are played sporadically during the work.

This piece is dedicated to Misty Theisen and the students of Mars Hill University.

Performance Notes

Open Piece No. 7 is comprised of a series of chords and a separate section of soli and duos. The ensemble should begin together but progress at their own pace. The performers may choose to play only one note per chord or they may choose to cycle through every note of each chord (or as many as they choose) before proceeding to the next chord. Try to connect the notes. This work is very free. Take breaths as needed. Please take as much time as you feel necessary on each pitch.

During a performance each player may choose to perform a solo or may pair up to perform one of the duos (or both). Performing a solo or duo is not mandatory. [...]
