Program Notes

This sensitive composition is a celebration of life, depicting the many sights and sounds, reflections and prayers of a chilly Easter Morning. The music, as if emanating from a church tower and spilling forth from a church organ, carries us along in emotional reverie that is at times exuberant to dark, then reverent to light. The celebration begins with lilting eighth notes in the woodwinds over a hemiola (a rhythm of three beats against two beats) found in the bells. Brass enter with a festive fanfare for the Easter season and solos are featured in the bass clarinet, flutes, bassoon, and oboe. The familiar church hymn Old Hundredth or Doxology begins in the horns, joined by a rich brass chorale. After a general pause the work continues with exciting alternating rhythms, and ends Gloria in excelsis Deo! with a satisfying three-over-two hemiola.
