Program Notes

Kenneth Alford is the pen name of Frederick Joseph Ricketts (1881-1945), who was a bandmaster in the British Army during World War I. He wrote many of his famous marches, including On the Quarterdeck during that time. The quarter deck of a ship is the raised area where the captain generally stands in command. It is also the area where ceremonial events take place.
