Program Notes

I experienced a period of frightening clarity in those moments when nature is so beautiful. I am

no longer sure of myself, and the paintings appear as in a dream.

- Vincent van Gogh

On a Starry Night is a concert piece inspired by the painting of the same name by the famed Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, this masterpiece depicts a pre-dawn view from his bedroom window (with the addition of an idyllic village) at an asylum where he was being treated for symptoms of delusions, psychotic attacks, and epilepsy.

- Program Note from score

Inspired by the painting of the same title by the famed Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, this work evokes the calmness and serenity of the starry scene while capturing the grandeur of the painting's swirling sky and dramatic moon, providing a sense of abiding warmth, peace, and hope.
