Program Notes

This slow ballad depicts the final days of Lonesome George, who died in 2012 as the last of the giant Galapagos tortoises of Pinta Island. An opening solo is the prelude for an extremely expressive melody that builds to an emotional finish. Students will be challenged both emotionally and musically with this simple but descriptive lyrical piece.

- Program Note from publisher

Lonesome George was a male Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii) and the last known individual of the species. In his last years, he was known as the rarest creature in the world. George serves as an important symbol for conservation efforts in the Galápagos Islands and throughout the world.
