Program Notes
The Octet-Partita in E-flat is a typically “sunny” work by Hummel. The only known score of the Octet resides in the British Museum and is dated 27 October 1803. This puts its creation at just a few months before his first significant employment, to the Prince Esterházy at Eisenstadt. The work is scored for standard wind octet plus a serpent ad lib, although contrabassoon is sometimes substituted. It is unusual for a partita in that it has only three movements, there being no minuet. The sonata-form first movement begins with a military-type fanfare which soon leads to a pompous yet sweet second theme. The Andante is a charming and simple 6/8 melody giving way to an elegant Allegretto, with the horn calls of the Vivace finale evoking the thrill of a hunt.
