Program Notes
Gianni Schicchi is a comic opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini composed in 1917-18. Based on an incident mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy, the work is the third and final installment of Puccini’s Ii trittico, three one-act operas with contrasting themes. Though originally written to be presented together, Gianni Schicchi continues to be performed alone or with one or both of the other trittico operas.
The aria 0 Mio Babbino Caro(O my dear papa) is one of Puccini’s most popular and is considered by some to be one of the greatest arias in opera. Sung by the principal female character Lauretta (soprano), the aria could be characterized as the only moment of genuine emotion and expression in a tale fraught with duplicity and misdirection. Lauretta pleads with her father to ease tensions with the family of her true love, Rinuccio.
