Program Notes

nostalgia – noun 1. a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland, or to one's family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time: a nostalgia for his college days. 2. something that elicits or displays nostalgia.

Nostalgia begins with a harmonization in perfect fourths reminiscent of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Rodeo bringing back thoughts of earlier simpler times. This lyrical section is then interrupted by a fast paced and ultimately heroic faster section each time it appears. An introspective chorale makes its appearance near the end near the end in place of the lyrical melody. The work finally drifts off quietly with the lyrical melody.

What makes you nostalgic?
