Program Notes

This dramatic concert band work depicts a watershed moment in American history. Written in honor of the Little Rock Central Nine and the 60th anniversary of the integration of the Little Rock school system, this work showcases an original spiritual by the composer (Show Me the Light) that is set in conflict with opposing forces who march, shout, and jeer before the melody emerges again, triumphant. At turns tender, furious, contemplative, and triumphant, The Nine features a solo for vocalist (optionally cued for instruments) and is sure to be an audience and student favorite.
