Newell H. Long

Biography

Newell H. Long (12 February 1905, Merkle, Ind. – 5 January 1999, Indiana) was an American composer.

Newell Hillis Long earned his first degree in mathematics at Indiana University, then changed his major to music and completed the requirements for the MA and EdD degrees at the same university and the MS degree in music education at Northwestern University. His principal composition teachers were Winfred Merrill and Robert Sanders.

Long became a professor of music at Indiana University in 1935 and retired from teaching in 1975. His music experience with bands ranged from several years as associate director at his university to conductors of the Bloomington Community Band in 1978. Additional administrative experience included the presidency of both the Music Educators National Conference (North Central Division) and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors.

Examples of Long's varied interests in composition may be shown by his Bravo for Benny (orchestra), Journey Toward Freedom (chorus and orchestra), and Royal Clambake (trombone quartet). Among his most popular band works are Lincoln Lyric Overture, Symphonic Variations on Yankee Doodle, The Wise Owl, and Art Show.
