Program Notes

New Orleans Sunday Morning is the fourth in a series of American songbooks by Clifton Jones for symphonic band. It is a setting of three popular hymn tunes, Just a Closer Walk, Amazing Grace and When the Saints..., arranged in a New Orleans jazz style. The arrangements of the hymns are familiar, but distinctive. Amazing Grace is usually in 3/4 meter; here it is set in 4/4, almost in the style of a ballad, but still retaining its beautiful, simple melody. When the Saints... is a set of variations that alternately features trumpets, clarinets and low brass, and ends in a noisy parade style. The whole thing should be fun for the performers and the audience.
