Program Notes
Mythen (German, Mythos, pl) is derived from the Greek word mythos (myth in English), which means "word of mouth". A myth is a traditional story about ostensibly historical events that serves to illustrate part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief or natural phenomenon. The active beings in myths are generally gods and heroes. These characters are often larger than life and embody either good or evil, or a paradox of both. Myths traditionally concern stories regarding the origins of the world, and hence, often take place before recorded history begins.
Mythen is a musical portrayal of the good and evil aspect of mythology. Often dark, sometimes lyrical, sometimes heroic, the music explores the paradox of good and evil, light and dark and their role in the origin of the world through juxtaposition of lyrical elements with strongly dissonant and aggressive elements, tonal elements with non-tonal elements and the juxtaposition of instrumental color.
