Program Notes

This work was commissioned to honor Dave Kallman, a middle school band instructor for several decades in Austin, Minnesota, who died in 2016, and to keep his memory alive in the community and beyond.

The beginning of the piece opens with quick, playful notes that represent the “twinkle he had in his eyes.” There is a part that shows his heart, his love of students and of his family. There is a section that is big and bold, representing his legacy in Austin, and there are interjected notes that show his penchant for humor.

Thinking back to the man he’d known early in life, Timothy Mahr said, “Dave Kallman seemed to find great joy in every teaching opportunity and I’ve tried to do the same ever since. We’re fortunate to make a living helping the young discover who they are through the art of music.”
