Program Notes

Little to no historical information is available regarding the inception of Françaix’s Mozart new-look. The composition is very short (less than three minutes in duration) and is composed for double bass solo with wind dectet accompaniment. It is unknown for whom (if anyone in particular) the double bass solo was originally composed. The musical material in Mozart new-look is based on the aria Deh, vieni alIa finestra from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. Françaix also quotes the aria Près des remparts de Seville from Act I of Bizet’s opera Carmen.
