Program Notes

On a recent trip to the mountains of western North Carolina I had the opportunity to hear some fine bluegrass musicians performing at a small restaurant. They love their music and it showed! On the way home I began to think about how to transfer that joy into a piece for band, and Mountain Dance was the result.

The composition is based on three common Appalachian mountain tunes, Cluck Old Hen, Sourwood Mountain, and Poor Polly, which are weaved together throughout the piece. At times, the piece has traces of sounds from the Irish, who settled the Appalachian Mountains.
