Program Notes
For double brass choir and percussion, Monolith is a fanfare that is all about giant blocks of sound. Each block of sound is meant to be a different mountain thrusting up from the earth, sometimes with more mountains breaking through the previous ones. The momentum provided by the more rapid moving lines represent the magic that dances while pulling these mountains from the earth. There is extended use of polytonality throughout the fanfare, as well as some stereo effects.
