Program Notes
The work beings with Movement I, Sonorous, a slow, lush and rich statement of vertical sonorities. Movement II, With vigor, features a one-in-the-bar 5/8 imitative treatment of the opening figure of repeated notes. Movement III, Resonant, creates a slow, homophonic contrast. Movement IV, Fast, presents hammerstroke seventh chords followed by driving melodic lines alternating with hammerstrokes creating a quasi rondo formal pattern.
Miniatures for Trombone Quartet was commissioned by the US Naval Academy Trombone Quartet and premiered by them in Annapolis, Maryland.
