Program Notes

Miniature Set for Band was composed late in 1957 and premiered by the Depaul University concert band in March 1958. During the 10th annual CBDNA (College Band Directors National Association) conference in December of that year, it was voted the most outstanding contribution to band literature in 1958. The work was the first in a series of 14 miniature sets composed by White over the next 20 years.

The set, eventually published in 1964, consists of five brief movements, each exploring a singular short musical idea. Two slow movements, which include contemplative passages for solo flute and dialogue for solo horn and cornet, are enclosed by miniatures which feature rhythmic movement, exchange of sonorities among different sections, and occasional bi-chordal harmonies. Interestingly enough, the composer utilizes the full band sound for only a total of 16 measures.
