Program Notes

Many people died in the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami on March 11, 2011, and Japan was deeply saddened.

In 2016, I was blessed with the opportunity to provide music at the request of Miyagi SOUBUN Private High School Joint Wind Band. Miyagi SOUBUN is an abbreviation of the All Japan Senior High School Cultural Festival in Miyagi. As a composer, I wanted to help, and I was involved in reconstruction assistance by connecting young musicians.

The first half represents the moment, the silence, the anger and the sadness, when the earthquake and tsunami destroyed everything. The middle part represents a bell of requiem, a chorale, and a wish for reconstruction like the morning sun shining on the surface of the sea. The final scene ends with a lively festival (Japanese music) aiming for a peaceful future, with the hope that the people will live a fruitful life and work together to become one.

On August 4, 2017, Miyagi SOUBUN Private High School Joint Wind Band premiered Memory, Prayer and Revival for Higashi Nihon at the All Japan Senior High School Cultural Festival in Miyagi. It was a work that I composed with all my heart, and I was moved by the music that more than 100 members made together, and I was full of tears. I will never forget that the heartfelt message of the performers reached the hearts of the audience through music.
