Program Notes

The Theme is for solo horn and percussion ensemble and segues into Variation One for the full brass and percussion ensembles. Variation Two is for the Double reed ensemble, Variation Three for flute and clarinet ensembles, Variation Four for the saxophone and percussion ensemble, and Variations Five and Six are for the full wind ensemble.

I have dedicated this composition to the memory of Norman Dello Joio. We have all performed and/or conducted this American composer's wind band music. I can remember as a student in the 1960s, performing his Variants on a Mediaeval Tune, Scenes from "The Louvre", From Every Horizon and Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn, and as a high school wind ensemble conductor, conducting these masterworks with my students. His compositions and orchestrations are truly unique and enrich our repertoire. I hope all will continue to perform his music along with the many other composers who have left the wind band repertoire with great original concert works.

Medieval Variations for Wind Ensemble was commissioned by the 2008-2009 North Jersey Area Band “Wind Ensemble” for their forty-fifth anniversary concert. I wanted to compose a work that featured all of the choirs of the wind ensemble for this special occasion.
