Program Notes
This overture is a miniature tone poem depicting tournament day in medieval England. The beginning maestoso sets the stage, describing the gathering crowds, the grandeur of the arena, the waving flags, etc. . . . Soon the assembled crowd is quiet, anticipating the tournament and the arrival of the king and the royal party. The battle begins and the excitement increases. A unison chord and cymbal crash depicts the fallen warrior, and is followed by a dirge for him and the fore-going champions. The excitement returns and the overture ends, building into the regal music, denoting the departure of the king and his party.
