Program Notes

I grew up in the deep South of rural America and as a teenager played the French horn in the high school marching band. I was always drawn to the works of John Philip Sousa and Henry Fillmore, especially the moments when they ventured into minor keys. My new work Marche Militaire nudges that marching tradition a little by adding a new work in the minor key along with a few bars to temporarily 'wrong foot' the marchers. The work is dedicated to Glenn Meinlen, director of the Florida Jr. High School Band (Tallahassee) and Melvin Dean, director of the Boca Ciega High School Band (St. Petersburg, Florida).
