Program Notes

Maqamat is Robert Sheldon's second ever composition for concert band, completed in 1974 while he was an undergraduate and the University of Miami. The piece sat in Sheldon’s filling cabinet for 46 years and has only recently been published.

Maqamat refers to an Arabic maqam, the system of scales and modes used in traditional Arabic music. The scales or maqams are designed to convey various types of moods and feelings and are used in both secular and spiritual spheres. Sephardic Jewish liturgy follows the maqam system where the weekly maqam is chosen by the cantor based on the emotional state of the congregation or the weekly Torah reading. Sheldon’s piece uses a mix of maqams that have been slightly altered to eliminate micro-tonality and to fit within the tempered western scale.
