Program Notes

I was commissioned by the Kibougaoka High School Wind Orchestra in Nakama City, Fukuoka and composed this work. Kibougaoka High School Wind Orchestra premiered at Nakama Harmony Hall in February 2017. Makam Passionato is the third work of the 'Makam Trilogy', following the Makam Dances and Makam Spirits.

In addition to the Makam scale, I tried to incorporate elements of play into this piece by using contemporary musical styles and Middle Eastern rhythm patterns. In this work, there are some sudden scene developments in fast-paced scenes. If you analyze those characteristics, I think that the interest of this work will be further conveyed to the audience. There is a message from me, that the performers want passionate music. Therefore, I named it “Passionate” and made it the last work of the 'Makam Trilogy'.

Kibougaoka High School Wind Orchestra, which was commissioned, premiered the ensemble version of Makam Dance, the wind ensemble version of Makam Dances, Makam Spirits, and Makam Passionato. I will never forget their history of working on their dreams and hopes and providing wonderful musical expressions.
