Program Notes
For a long time, I was interested in classical music (makam) in the Middle East, so when I made this work, I decided to write mainly using notes F, H, C, D, E♭.
There are many improvisational elements in the melody of the first half (introduction), so please try to assemble the music while devising singing. In the second half (dance), the dynamic rhythm of the drums brings out the fun of this work, in addition to the melody and accompaniment. Please try various sounds for each scene.
Let's freely create a unique 'Makam Dance' with seven [or eight] people. I hope you have a wonderful performance!
Composed in October 2012 for the Kibougaoka High School in Nakama City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and premiered in December 2012 at Iizuka Cosmos Common.
- Program Note by composer (roughly translated from Japanese through Google Translate)
The Turkish makam is a system of melody types used in Turkish classical music and Turkish folk music. It provides a complex set of rules for composing and performance. Each makam specifies a unique intervalic structure and melodic development. Whether a fixed composition (beste, şarkı, peşrev, âyin, etc.) or a spontaneous composition (gazel, taksim, recitation of Kuran-ı Kerim, Mevlid, etc.), all attempt to follow the melody type. The rhythmic counterpart of makam in Turkish music is usul.
