Program Notes

With the translation "spirit of light," this dynamic work celebrates teachers as special people who have a light inside them that burns brightly and warms those near them with knowledge, inspiration, and love. Dedicated to a music educator who devoted her life and career to inspiring and instructing future generations of musicians, the work begins with a stately, heroic fanfare that introduces an energetic dance conveying the fun and energy her students routinely experienced through the use of bold melodic material, spirited rhythms, and effective contrasts of texture and dynamics. The opening fanfare then returns, setting a celebratory mood before an exhilarating final section brings the composition to a joyous conclusion.
