Program Notes
Part of the title of this work ("Lawrence Milk") is a joke on the name of long-time bandleader Lawrence Welk (1903-1992) known for his "champagne music." Welk's schmaltzy German-accented English heard on his television show was the source of frequent caricature.
The second part of the title ("Guy Lombago") refers to band director Guy Lombardo (1902-1977). Lombardo was a Canadian-American bandleader of Italian descent known as the "King of Corn." His band was the Royal Canadians.
Lumbago is an old term for lower back pain. The joke's almost as old as Lombardo's career.
