Program Notes
The Latin American Suite combines three of the most familiar Latin dance styles into one piece giving one movement to each: Beguine. Tango, and Rumba. The Beguine is a slow dance style similar to the rhumba although it incorporates a much longer form. The Tango has many styles today and originally was known as tango criollo when it originated in the area of Rio de la Plata located in Argentina and Uruguay. Rumba may be transliterated to denote “party” or “spree”.
