Program Notes

Written in 1738, Xerxes is one of the last operas composed by Handel. The melody from the section marked 'Larghetto' has had a life of its own, having been arranged for almost any instrument or combination of instruments. Possibly its degree of success is in its simplicity and the ease with which it can be remembered.
