Program Notes
Each movement of this four-movement suite corresponds to a photograph of the Rochester, New York, area. The exciting opening movement, Douglas-Anthony Bridge, is marked "Allegro," while the contrasting Veterans Memorial Bridge, marked "Andante con moto," begins with a snare drum and timpani ostinato. Taps, played by the trumpets, is the dominant thematic material with hints of America the Beautiful and The Star-Spangled Banner. Next, the evocative Concrete Angel (a cemetery photo), marked "Andante," begins and ends with atmospheric soli mallet percussion. The concluding Frontier Field and Kodak Tower, marked "Allegro," offers brief solo opportunities for alto saxophone and trumpet and includes motives from earlier movements to create closure.
