Program Notes

Kokyou was commissioned to celebrate Akita Symphonic Band’s 30th anniversary; it premiered at their 27th annual concert in 2005. There are three movements.

I. Warabe-Uta (Children’s Song), utilizing a children’s folk song from Akita that portrays snow quietly falling to the ground. II. Soushun (Spring Hamony) portrays the welcome joy of late spring coming to Akita intertwined with the sunrise from Mt. Taiheizan (worshipped since ancient times). III. Kokyou (Beat). Then summer arrives, bringing the sound of a Japanese traditional flute, of chanchiki, and the crowded festival heating up to a climax.
