Program Notes
The composer’s normal day is the inspiration for this bright, engaging overture. Musically descriptive, the composition aptly conveys the starts and stops of a morning commute through rush hour traffic to a downtown Seattle studio, the breathtaking view of a lake and snow-covered Olympic Mountains during the drive, the calm relaxation experienced while creating music, and finally the commute home. Based on a simple three-note motif that appears throughout the piece in many variations including elongation, diminution, and retrograde, the composition features melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic interest throughout with effective contrasts of texture and dynamics.
