Program Notes

Rhythmic and energetic, this begins with a sense of awe and mystery, accurately attributed to these two groups. This work gives a unique treatment to the popular Christmas tunes, We Three Kings and Angels We Have Heard on High, by using odd meter to give an extra step to the dancers, and for upbeat variety and rhythmic fun for the audience.

Commissioned by the Durham Middle School Wind Ensemble in Lewisville, Texas, in the fall of 2019, for its first performance under their new director, Mrs. Ellie Murphy, Kings and Angels Dancing begins with a sense of awe and mystery accurately attributed to two groups – kings and angels.

Who are they? Where do they come from?

However, once they bring out the drum, the triangle and the cymbals, it is apparent that they are there to celebrate. There is even an extra step in their dance, for good measure.
