Program Notes

Kalla was composed specifically for University of Saskatchewan professor Dean McNeill for his residency and performance with the 2009 National Youth Band of Canada. The piece won the 2012 Composition of the Year from the Western Canadian Music Awards. The title of the composition is the Norwegian word for "call," and the piece is based on the late 19th and early 20th century trumpet popular in New Orleans. Here trumpet players would call down and across the mighty Mississippi River to see who could produce the longest resonating notes, and the most difficult musical lines.
