Program Notes

The fourth movement of The Planets by Hoist (1874-1934) is Jupiter (The Bringer of Jollity). The slow middle section of the movement is scored here. Marked “Adagio,” the stately hymn-like theme, first heard in the clarinets and alto saxophones, evokes a ceremonial and processional quality.
