The contemporary wind band has come a long way since its origins in ceremonial and marching bands, presenting the composer of today with an ensemble of great sophistication, comparable to the sonic potential and refinement of a symphony orchestra. Yet there’s something about the wind ensemble’s more raucous origins - as an entity capable of producing a great din audible outdoors, or at noisy events - that excites me as a composer, and when conductor Damon Talley contacted me about a new work for a consortium of college wind ensembles I decided to create a piece that showcases the wind ensemble’s more primitive roots.

In composing Junk Band, I decided to create a short, high-energy piece that above all revels in the sheer fun of ram, unrefined sound-with performers playing their instruments in all kind of unexpected ways, and with ensemble augmented by the addition of “repurposed” instruments including bottles, bags of trash, whistles, and even balloons. Just as in the impromptu musical get-togethers of my youth (which sparked a lifelong inserters in composing), I wanted this piece to get back to the idea of a “band” as a flexible configuration based around creative experimentation with whatever sound-making devices that happened to be on hand.

Junk Band is a celebration of the vast sonic potential inherent in the wind ensemble, and an expression of my deeply-held belief that the crudest and least “musical” of sounds can provoke us to experience music from a fresh perspective.

Junk Band was commissioned by a consortium led by Damon Talley and Shenandoah Conservatory.
