Program Notes

Jubilo meaning 'joyful' was commissioned to celebrate the birthday of a man, Richard Bassett, "who loved life and lived well!" Carroll's fingerprint (very Irish) rhythmic style is in evidence but remarkably user friendly.

- Program Note from publisher

The work is basically in 9/8 but with significant metric variations. The composer writes, "I always found mixed meters (over a definite pulse) extremely stimulating. Playing in orchestra pits as a boy, I came across musical such as Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar which used them extensively. In college I very much got into the work of Igor Stravinsky, and to a lesser extent some of the minimalists, like John Adams. Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale is a particular favorite of mine for this reason."
