Program Notes

As the title suggests, the work derives its primary material from Beethoven's Ode to Joy and the Dies Irae from Symphony Fantastique by Hector Berlioz. While the statements of the Dies Irae are both prominent and obvious, in two chorale/fanfare statements and later in triple meter with altered harmonies, the Ode to Joy references are far more subtle. The work derives much of its excitement and energy from its wide dynamic range and frequently changing meter.

Joy Fantastique was commissioned by the McCracken Middle School Symphonic Band for its performance at the Midwest Clinic on December 22, 2006.
