Biography

Joop de Winter (b. 14 January 1932, Ankeveen, Netherlands) is a Dutch flutist, accordionist, composer and conductor.

De Winter began piano lessons at the age of 8, and two years later, he took lessons on the flute. He thereafter entered the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he also studied flute and piano. In addition to piano, flute, and piccolo, De Winter also played accordion. He made a live appearance on May 12, 1960, on the Canadian Broadcasting (CBC) television station playing that instrument.

In 1959, De Winter joined the Luchtmacht Band as a flutist. He formed a combo from the members of that band that played for Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth of England in Pari. The group also traveled to Ottawa, Canada, to perform in the presence of John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie.

De Winter returned to the Netherlands and devoted himself to directing bands. He first led the Wilskracht Band of Amersfoort, and from 1963 to1991 he was leader of their adult band and junior orchestra. From 1963 until 1986, he also led the senior orchestra in Wilskracht. He soon founded the Wilskracht Regional Concert Orchestra, which he led until 1989. Under his direction, this orchestra made many appearances on radio, and he took the junior orchestra to the European Music Festival for Youth in Nneeapelt, Belgium. In 1977, this junior orchestra was awarded the highest prize there. De Winter also directed a number of other fanfare and wind bands.

From 1974 until the middle of 1984, De Winter played flute with Amsterdam Police Band, the only professional police band in the Netherlands. When the bandmaster of this band fell ill, De Winter substituted for him.

He was awarded the F.K.M. with gold federation insignia for meritorious service to band music, and the medal of the Order of Oranje Nassau in gold. He was also named an honorary member of the B Mol Band (March, 1997) and was named a freeman of the city of ‘s Graveland (February 2, 1999).

Beginning in his 60th year, De Winter began to compose and arrange for band.
