Biography

John Alan Pennington ( b. 12 January 1939, Galesburg, Ill. ) is an American composer, music educator, conductor, and percussionist.

Dr. Pennington attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the University of Arizona at Tucson, and Arizona State University at Tempe. As a percussionist, he was a member of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and of the Music in the Mountains Music Festival Orchestra. He has gained experience in African, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, Cuban and South Indian Karnataka tradition and Hindustani tradition of music.

He taught at Fort Lewis College in Durango (Colorado ) from 1992 to 2008. He is also Artistic Director of the Animas Music Festival in Durango (Colorado). He was also a professor of music at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

As a solo percussionist, Pennington has performed in over 25 countries around the world and is a sought-after soloist for the Percussive Arts Society International Conventions.

As a composer he wrote many works in which the percussion is central.
