Program Notes

Jingle Bells! Samba Bells! is a setting of James Pierpont's Jingle Bells in a samba style. This beloved and popular dance form originated in Rio de Janeiro and has become universally recognized as a symbol of Brazilian culture and national identity. The piece begins with an easy percussion groove and gradually blossoms into a rich harmonic concentration on the familiar theme. The melody passes playfully throughout the sections of the ensemble in varying styles before ending in grand holiday fashion.

William Owens’s arrangement sets the traditional Jingle Bells in a samba style. This beloved and popular dance form originated in Rio de Janeiro and is universally recognized as a symbol of Brazilian culture. The piece features percussion with an easy samba groove and then playfully passes the melody throughout the ensemble.
