Program Notes

This is an excellent work that explores the style and flavor of Japanese music. Characteristic scales and harmonies are coupled with extensive percussion that mimics authentic Japanese instruments. The scoring is bold and colorful, and challenging.

Japanese Festival is a spirited piece celebrating the Japanese culture. Although no authentic folksongs were used here, he composer evokes the excitement, style and flavor of Japanese music.

Japanese Festival was commissioned by and dedicated to the North Courtland Elementary School Fifth Grade Band, East Stroudsburg, PA, Melodie A. Shamp, Director.
