Program Notes
Jambo is Swahili and translates as “hello.” The composition was created from extended sketches Basler wrote while living in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1993-94 as the senior Fulbright lecturer in Music at Kenyatta University.
Stylistic influences in the work come from his experiences with Kenyan choral traditions call and response and the joyful, optimistic and celebratory nature of Kenyans.
