Program Notes

Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (That's an Irish lullaby) was composed in 1913 by the then-prominent Irish-American composer and lyricist James Royce Shannon (1881-1946) for the Tin Pan Alley musical Shameen Dhu. The lullaby is first played by the solo clarinet with woodwind and horn accompaniment, but a countermelody in the solo flute is soon added. The well-crafted and occasionally transparent scoring allows both woodwind and brass choirs to be heard independently. The quiet ending highlights a duet for two clarinets.
