Program Notes

The work is based on a 16th Century hymn melody Rendez a Dieu by French composer Louis Bourgeois. The coda features sonorities imitating the timbre of large cast-bronze bells.

Introit was commissioned by the Manatee High School Band in Bradenton, Florida. directed by Howard Lerner.

- Program Note from publisher

Introit (1983) is based on the sixteenth-century hymn melody Rendez à Dieu, or “Return to God.” About eight minutes in length, the piece uses techniques from different periods in music history as variations (there are three variations and a coda). Opening the piece is a homorhythmic, chorale presentation of the hymn in woodwind and brass choirs. Tull then creates a five-part fugue exclusively featuring the percussion section. He fragments the theme throughout the ensemble in the third section and, in the fourth section, he presents the theme in augmentation underneath ostinato figures in the woodwind section.
