Program Notes

Innerludes is a set of five short pieces for struck and bowed vibraphones and melodicas, The first piece res(pi,)t, was composed in 2016, and the remaining four were completed in 2018.

There are three unifying elements found throughout all movements: first, I was inspired by (and attempted to recreate with acoustic instruments) the lush, granular sound of electronic vocoders and other synthesized effects, exemplified especially by artists like Bon Iver, Jacob Collier, and Imogen Heap. Second, each movement draws on a concept from mathematics or symbolic logic for its musical construction and/or programmatic evocations. Finally, each movement is made from a deeply personal connection or nostalgic memory of mine, hence the title Innerludes.

lull∀by is spelled using the upside down “A” symbol “∀” (meaning “for all”) from symbolic logic: a “lullaby for all” if you will. I sought to capture universal qualities of comforting a child as they fall asleep -- not only peace and tranquility, but also the anxiety and unease that come with sleepless nights and the responsibility of raising a child in a beautiful but volatile world. After a lush introduction, the music seems to wander as angular harmonies rebound and echo around the ensemble. These wandering chords eventually coalesce into an earnest and more traditional lullaby that carries the movement to its conclusion.

lull∀by was written for my dear friends Darrin and Julie Hicks to celebrate the birth of their daughter Olivia. It was commissioned and premiered by Chris Meredith, Alicia DeSoto, and the Shadow Ridge Honor Winds for their performance at the 2018 Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
